The script and the direction was tailored to shoring up his shortcomings... and it made for a fun movie. Gondry just lets Black off his leash, and expects his schtick to do the heavy lifting. Jack Black is a lot like Robin Williams - charming and effective if managed well, sloppy and overbearing when left to their own devices.
